Technology at the Library
The big news in technology at the Library is ...Koha.
Koha is our new open source ILS (Integrated Library System). We are
transitioning from our old, very obsolete and unsupported system to a new
state of the art system. Koha was initially developed in New Zealand
and the name means "gift", which is appropriate because no one owns open
source software, rather it is available for free to anyone. Anyone who
improves Koha shares the enhancements with all Koha users everywhere for
free. What we pay for is hosting (it is "cloud computing" which means
it is a website), server
maintenance, backups, and tech support. And, patrons can log
into Koha to check borrowing status, change contact info, place holds, and
create a list of books you'd like to read.
Give Koha a try.
Patron Computers and Internet Access
The Walpole Town Library is constantly seeking to upgrade and
expand the computer services available to the public.
Computer use is free and available in 30 minute intervals.
This period may be extended if no other patron is waiting.
The North Walpole Branch has one computer for patron use and
the Bridge Memorial Library has four. In addition, the
Bridge Memorial Library has free Internet access for laptop
users. Children under the age of 18 must have a parent or
guardian accompany them to sign a permission slip in order to
use the Library's Internet connection.
All the patron computers have software (e.g. Word, Excel,
Works or Google Docs) for working with text documents and
spreadsheets.
Some have additional software. Please discuss any special
requirements with the staff when requesting computer access.
Study Computer
The Study Computer is a research resource for the young
people of Walpole. The purpose is to help with homework
and reports. The most useful sites have been added as
favorites, and help is always available if needed when searching
for information to complete an assignment.
Check at the Circulation desk to use the Study Computer.
Print, Copy and Fax
Both Libraries have equipment for patrons to use for
printing, copying, and faxing. The price per page depends
on what you are doing, black vs. color, and sending or receiving
faxes.
Other Resources.
The Library has access to
downloadable audiobooks and eBooks,
kids books online,
catalogs for the
NH State Library and for all automated libraries in the state,
online research databases
available from home, and research
databases available only within the Library.
